Evaluation

During this unit I produced 3 graphic design products. These are a Poster, Digipack CD artwork and 4 pages of a Programme. I based all three of these products on the band Chase and Status in association with their next tour. I thought that the quality of all three products was that of a high standard, I put allot of thought into the design stage and allot of detail and effort in the editing stage.
The three products I created have a high fitness for purpose, which is to advertise the band and their up-coming tour. I achieved a high fitness for purpose by making the products bright to catch the audience’s eye and to follow other poster conventions to advertise the events.
As it stands, the products appeal to the target audience. In order to make it more appealing to the target audience the poster must be put up in necessary places such as outside nightclubs.
Compared to this Chase and Status poster I believe mine is better. This is because mine is much more edited and very colorful which I believe is important due to the genre of music. I also believe that my poster portrays how the event will look more on the night encouraging more people to go.

The Digipak CD Cover I created was made using photoshop. I made this CD Cover following current methods used by Chase and Status such as the yellow font color and font. I brightened the front CD Cover up by adding Lense Flares in each corner along with the picture of a rave including strobe lights and people. I put a picture of Earth in the middle of theif album adding to the punn 'On Top Of The World'.
The CD Cover is aimed at the target audience of teens and young adults, who are interested in this genre of music. The genre of music is portrayed by the image of the rave behind Earth.

I finally created 4 pages of a Programme which would be sold at their live tour. These pages are Front, Upcoming gigs, Previous gigs and Alexandra palace special. The Programme has been edited fully throughout making it look more bright and catch the eye of the target audience. I could not find examples of any previous Chase and Status Programmes on the internet so i made one based on how i would imagine it to look.

Client Feedback

Feedback from my client to be added

Feedback from others

Lucy - I thought that all three of Toms products look good. The poster looks as though it has been made professionally. I enjoyed the metaphor on the digipack and like how it has been used as this is commonly seen on album artwork of today. The programme however could of included more body text.

Adam - I liked the use of lens flares throughout all of your products. The colour scheme was nice and bright, the texture heading on the poster may look better as just yellow text following the same style as the other products however still good ides. all in all great products.

Jack - As a Chase and Status fan I believe that all of the products are defiantly aimed at the right target audience and I enjoy the way that Tom has stuck to the current codes and conventions of the band for example the color scheme.

Poster - Final edit

During the editing process of this poster I decided to add more emphasis onto the image of Alexandra Palace. I achieved this with a new image found of the Internet with sections edited out and a lot of work. The typeface didn’t stand out after this step so I therefore added a stroke and gradient overlay to the typeface, which I believe, makes it stand out much more.
The image at the bottom didn’t suit the rest of the poster once edited so I tried out different effects concluding with the over lay effect I achieved which I believe looked effective.
I then finally added two lens flares to the centre of the poster in-between chase and status filling the blank empty space in the middle. After changing the rotation and blending mode of the layer I believe it fitted in well and the poster was a success.

A02 - Poster Draft

\

Above is the draft I designed for the poster. I will present all three of my drafts to my client at once when they are all completed.

A02 - pre production stage

Before the designing process i decided to find the official font or a similar font which chase and status use on there current album covers and posters. I couldn't find a official font but i did find this font on a website which is identical

I will make the words 'Chase' also 'Status' bold, therefor making it look more like on the poster above.

Meeting with - My client - Dr Cliflands
Date - Thursday 19th April 2012
Time - 13:00
Present - Dr Cliflands
Apologies - None

Items discussed
  • Discuss the band/artist I have chosen to base my project on, Chase and Status (who they are, what they do, appropriate history)
I told my client that I have decided to base my project on the band Chase and Status. Chase and Status are an Electronic based (Dubstep and Drum&Bass) music production duo. Chase and Status are a sell out act winning various music awards and entering the UK top 40 charts and have had 3 consecutive yearly tours (2009, 2010, 2011)
My client was impressed by my research of the band and believes that it would make a good project.
  • Discuss the products I have chosen to create for them (CD Cover, Poster and Programme) and why I have chosen to create them
I told my client that I have chosen to create a CD cover, Poster and Programme. I said that I have chosen to choose these products as they are regular releases by the band and it would be un-natural for them to release anything else.
  • The current house styles of CD's, Posters and Programme's  (colors and effects)
The current house style of the band is use of yellow fonts such as their last years album "More than alot" and their live music performance posters. I would also presume that the font on the front of the programme is yellow and maybe throughout. I also told my Client that during my research I also found out that the blur effect is sometimes used on their posters (the majority of their posters) and their latest CD cover follows a black and whit style with yellow font.
  • Previous CD's and live performances (details of them and their design)
Me and my client first discussed previous CD's the band has released. We came to the conclusion that their first album 'More than alot' was not main stream enough not targeting a big enough audience and didn't give the band a strong and popular enough image. This means that I will not concentrate on this album while designing this one, I will concentrate on their second and latest album "No more idols"
We then discussed previous posters. Most posters online have not been designed by Chase and Status however Chase and Status have just been paid to preform at clubs. This means that i must be careful of which posters I decide to take ideas from

  • How the style of their next event and CD should be (the new house color)
After a long discussion me and my client decided that the house color will stay the same (the use of yellow and black and white effects) we decided that the house color should stay the same as it was only made their house color last year and allot of merchandise has been made, even recently, following the same house color.
  • Estimate time of creating the products
it will take approximately 2-3 months to create the products (including the design, feedback and improvement stages)
  • Budget
around £40,000

A02 - Respond to a client brief for a range of graphic design products.

Band / Artist - Chase and Status
Products to be made - Poster, CD Cover and Programme (All products will be based on their next UK tour)

Poster
The poster will be made the same size as all of Chase and Statuses other posters promoting live music events which is 254 x 202 mm. It will follow their house color which is the use of the color Yellow and must include a picture of them. Here are examples of previous chase and status posters promoting them playing live.

CD Cover
The CD cover will then follow the same house style as the poster. This is due to the fact that the CD will be made in association with their tour just like their live event from last year at Brixton academy and the CD seen below (the poster of this event is the first example poster above)

Programme
The programme will then also follow the same house style as the CD cover and poster. The front cover of the programme will be colorful and attractive to encourage purchase and will be full of information, the track list of the live event, and competitions.

AO1 - Part 4

Analysis Of Recycling pamphlet

Fitness For Purpose
This pamphlet is fit for purpose. It is distributed to every house in Shropshire and the details given are specific to their own address. The leaflet makes the householder aware of when their household waste is being collected. The purpose of this leaflet is to notify the different areas of Shropshire that their bins are collected on different days. The pamphlet successfully promotes recycling, encouraging the average household in North Shropshire to recycle and how they can do it. The pamphlet informs the audience all of the information they need to know about recycling and what can be recycled in each bin.

Target Audience
The recycling pamphlet is targeted at adults who live in a property in North Shropshire who require the services of the refuse collection service. There will be a number of variations to this leaflet as collection days vary in different areas. The vocabulary of the pamphlet is easy to read and understand allowing the target audience to vary from a young teenager right through to the elderly. The leaflet is worded in a way that people of all abilities can understand and is presented in a very simple format. The leaflet is not targeted to a particular gender.

Content
The text of the pamphlet has been typed in a reasonable font size and font allowing it to be easily understood. Titles have been typed in a larger font size and laid out neatly on the page making the pamphlet easy to navigate to a specific section.  Images are used to brighten up the leaflet and encourage it to be read, if their were no captions on the leaflet or color it would look far less interesting and more people would decide not to read it.

Format
The format of the leaflet is of an A4 size folded in half to create a neat and manageable leaflet that the householder can store for easy reference. The leaflet is made using thick paper that appears to have a coating e.g. Laminated, in order to protect it from the wet weather. The leaflet is usually distributed when the bins are being emptied and it is left usually in the lid of the wheeled bins and so it is important that it has the waterproof protection for rainy days.

Design and Layout
The pamphlet has been designed and laid out neatly. The color green and blue is used frequently. The blue is the house color of Shropshire council and I would think that the green is used to represent an eco-friendly image. A good proportion of the leaflet is made of graphics and images to keep readers interested and encourage them to read on. The design of the leaflet is also colorful with a layout which is easy to follow.

AO1 - Part 3

Analyzing a magazine advert for perfume

The advert was placed in a Glamour magazine for a DKNY perfume for women in 2011. Glamour magazine has a total circulation of 2,354,973. The median reader of the magazine is a 33 year old women. The median of readers have a $63,594 house hold income.

Mise En Scene
ad+2.jpg

The product is shown in its container in a barrel of apples at the very top, the packaging is shaped like an apple making it look fresh. The container stands out from the rest of the apples as it is shiny and a nice reflection can be seen. a women is standing behind the apples with one in her hand holding a apple, this symbolizes that the perfume is for women. They chose this model as she has a natural look. Their is artificial lighting behind the women made to look like sunlight and her hair is shining. Shadows are used on the models eyes to draw attention to them and also under the perfume container to frame it making it also stand out a bit more.  The model is giving the camera a seductive look making the audience feel as though if they buy this product they will look more attractive. The color scheme of the advert as a whole is a golden color, this makes the perfume look richer and adds to the attractiveness.

Text

The text, Golden Delicious is a catchy slogan and it stands out the most on the page. This is the name of a golden apple and that DKNY have chosen to name the product. DKNY is a designer label from New York and it is placed neatly in the middle of the bottom half of the page. The font used on the word golden is almost like the font that would be on a sweet wrapper and tilted to a angle. the sweet wrapper font makes the perfume seem more sweet and classy.

Image

I believe the poster has been made with 2 main layers/focuses, the apples which is a close up shot and the model with a bright blue sky above her head as what I would describe as a medium shot from the shoulders upwards to the sky.

Product Name / Company Name

The perfume product name is Golden Delicious by the brand DKNY. The name DKNY gives the perfume an expensive look due to its designer reputation and expensive price. the golden colors add to this effect. The name Golden Delicious connotes the fact that the perfume will smell sweet and fresh along with the apples in the barrel.

Format

the page format is A4, Portrait. This is because the advert has been placed in a magazine. The advert covers 3 whole pages in the magazine.

A01 - part 2 (Digipak analysis)

Purpose

A digipak is designed to hold one or multiple music compact disks (CD's) the cover of a digipak generally depends on the genre of the music, portraying the genre. A digipak protects the CD and can be very artistic advertising the band or artist and for-filling its purpose.

Analysis

The format of the digipak is that it is just folded over like a card and their is one CD in each end. The digipak is full of bright colors which portrays the dance genre and their are images of grass and people at the music festival which is advertised by this CD also named "Creamfields" in the bottom left corner of the cover nicely margined from the edges is a list of the artists featured in the CD. Only the most popular names are featured on the front cover which encourage more people to buy the CD. The text on the cover "Creamfields" stands out alot with its white font over bright colors.
I believe that the digipak is good as it definitely reflects upon its genre and the atmosphere of a festival the name "Cream" is also a popular name for all dance music lovers along with other names such as ministry of sound which promotes the album.

Posters

Purpose

The purpose of the following posters are to advertise a film from 1994, Pulp Fiction. I chose this poster as it has a good example of a teaser and theatrical poster and it is a well known film poster in the film industry.

The format used in both of these posters is portrait, when looking for the size of the poster I found that it can reach between 23.5" x 31.5" to 26.5" x 39.25" the cost is normally around £10 which is quite expensive for a movie poster.
Both of these posters have a clear commercial purpose which is advertiseing a movie "Pulp Fiction" they have been designed in portrait with alot of dark colors and red which along with the gun image and women smoking connote crime and blood. i believe that the intended audience for these posters is adults above 18 meaning it would be advertised in certain sections of cinemas and adult shops including alcohol and tobacco stores.
To the left is the teaser poster for Quentin Tarantino's movie Pulp Fiction, to the right is the theatrical. The teaser poster was made and released to the public first which is simple and very good at its purpose which is teasing the audience and not giving too much information away about the film. on the teaser poster we are told that this movie has already won an award in the Cannes film festival. A definition of the word "Pulp" is given on the teaser poster. This tells the audience that the movie will contain a lurid subject matter. The only accurate information we are given about the movie on the teaser poster is that it is directed by Quentin Tarantino and that it will be released in October, it is also rated R (which is the american rating for 18) and the movie is distributed by Mirmax. big movie fans will also recognise that Uma Thurman is on the teaser poster even though she is un-credited, before the movie was made Uma was the lead role in "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" and she starred alongside Robert De Niro in "Mad Dog and Glory.
The theatrical poster was released closer to the time of the release of the film. It tells the audience alot more about the film without giving too much away. The movie is portrayed to have more of a crime genre than the teaser poster with a better angle of the gun infront of Uma in contrast with the bad condition design of the poster including the whit marks almost as though its wearing away. A list of the stars starring in this film are displayed down the left hand side below the 10 cent sign which gives the poster a big American look. Their are so many huge stars in this film so big that they could not be put in any particular order. John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson's names appear first followed by other big stars like Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth and last on the list Bruce Willis. A credit block is also on the bottom of the theatrical poster, this is probably due to the fact that the marketing has grew during the production / pre production of the film.

Institution
The teaser poster does not give much important information about the production context of the film. all we are told are 3 specific points which are the director (Quentin Tarantino) a Production company (Mirmax) and the certification rating (R, 18+)

Evaluation
I believe that both of these posters are good at communicating with the audience and making them want to watch the film. The stars on the theatrical poster would also definitely persuade the audience to watch the film as their are many big names.
